A small club (250 capacity) in the Lower East Side. Mercury Lounge is known for breaking new bands since the 1990s in an intimate, no-frills environment. It was a linchpin of the early 2000s NYC rock revival.
Acts like The Strokes, Interpol, The National, Jeff Buckley all played early gigs here. Its role in the post-punk/garage-rock boom of the early 2000s is notable – one of the first places industry scouts saw The Strokes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, effectively launching those careers. Known for late shows and being artist-friendly (a classic black box room with quality sound system). The venue's simple but effective design (long narrow room, stage at one end, bar at the other) is often a tour stop for UK bands doing their first US show.
