A historic large nightclub and concert venue in the East Village. Webster Hall was originally built in 1886 as a ballroom. In rock history, it's famed for its 1980s stint as The Ritz, one of NYC's top rock clubs. Today, Webster Hall (capacity ~1,400) remains a prime venue for live music and dance nights.
The Ritz in the '80s was legendary – brought cutting-edge video technology (giant screen) and booked wide range of acts. U2's first US club gig was at The Ritz in December 1980. Madonna performed early industry showcase in 1983. Hosted hardcore punk nights (Rock Hotel series), early thrash metal shows, and concerts from Prince, Duran Duran, Guns N' Roses. Webster Hall in '90s/'00s continued legacy, hosting Rage Against the Machine, Mika, Nine Inch Nails, plus famous dance parties. Known as "The Ballroom" with multiple floors for events. Site of 1990s MTV show "Live at The Ritz". The Ritz operated 1980-1989 with giant video wall; MTV's Live at The Ritz concerts broadcast hard-rock to the world. Notable acts included Guns N' Roses, The Cult, Public Image Ltd, The Smiths.
