A large old pub/hotel complex in Hammersmith that became a legendary music venue. The Clarendon's upstairs Ballroom and downstairs Broadway bar were home to pivotal alternative music events from the late 1970s through 1988. Most famous as the host venue for Klub Foot, the epicenter of London's psychobilly scene throughout the 1980s.
The Clarendon was a key venue for punk, goth, indie, and especially psychobilly. Its Klub Foot nights (started 1982) made it the worldwide epicenter of psychobilly, hosting The Meteors, Guana Batz, Demented Are Go. Major acts included early U2 (1980), The Damned, The Ramones, The Birthday Party (Nick Cave), Sisters of Mercy, All About Eve. Also hosted influential Sunday heavy metal nights. The venue's closure and demolition in 1988-89 for the Hammersmith Broadway Centre marked the end of an era. A series of "Farewell" concerts ("The Final Curtain at the Klub Foot") were held in June 1988.
