Bensonhurst warehouse turned 'Rock Capital of Brooklyn' and East-Coast thrash cradle. A storied rock/metal club that was the premier venue for heavy metal and hard rock in the NYC area throughout the 1980s.
Crucial in the development of thrash metal – Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax all played there in early/mid-80s (Metallica's first NYC-area show was at L'Amour in 1983). Equally important for local scene: bands like Biohazard, Type O Negative, Overkill, Carnivore (Peter Steele) considered it home turf. Also welcomed hair metal (Twisted Sister). Reputation: tough crowd, booming sound system, where East Coast metalheads congregated weekly. Featured regular "Battle of the Bands" nights that helped launch local acts. Had multiple locations at times but Brooklyn original had the legacy. Broke Metallica, Slayer, Iron Maiden secret show; dubbed the 'CBGB of heavy metal'. 50 kW sound system; resident DJ Alex Kayne mixed horror visuals with metal sets.
