A punk rock club on St. Marks Place in the East Village, active in the mid-1990s. Coney Island High was a two-level club (bar downstairs, stage upstairs) that became a center of the NYC punk revival, hosting everything from hardcore matinees to ska and rockabilly nights.
In its short life, Coney Island High was the spot for punk in the '90s. Hosted shows by The Misfits (reformed), Rancid, NoFX, Dropkick Murphys, and local NYC punk bands. Home to the Joey Ramone Birthday Bash concerts each May – legendary gatherings of punk alumni (Joey held his bashes there 1997, 1998, 1999). Closure symbolized the end of St. Marks as gritty punk haven. Name evoked both amusement park vibe and high school. Had all-ages shows and fostered late '90s ska resurgence with popular ska nights. Shutdown often pinned on old cabaret law (lacked proper dancing license).
